Samuel Essey

Samuel Essey, 93, of Monessen, died Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in Hallsworth House. He was born on May 16, 1920, the son of the late Esper and Anna Abraham Essey. Sam was a 1939 graduate of Monessen High School and a member of St. Michael Antiochian Orthodox Church. He was veteran of WW II, having served with the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Arkansas in the American Theater and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He was a member of Thomas McKee Post 28 of the American Legion, Allison Lescanac Post 1190 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, B.P.O.E. 773, and the Monessen Lions Club, having served as president and honored to be chosen a Melvin Jones Fellow. He retired from the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation having worked in the rolling mill. Sam went on to be administrative assistant to the late PA House of Representative Majority Leader, James J. Manderino. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Elmunda "Munda" (George) Essey, a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Teri Essey of Fallowfield Twp., a daughter, Ginger Gerdish of Fallowfield Twp., a son-in-law, Gregory Gerdish of Allenport, a brother, George Essey of Monessen, four grandchildren, Jarrod (Katie) Essey, Cory (Mike) Motycki, Dillion and Chad Gerdish, and by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Sherri and Linda Essey, and by three brothers, Michael, Norman, and Gerald Essey. Friends will be received on Friday, March 14, 2014 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Ave. Monessen. Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 15, 2014 at 10:00 am in St. Michael Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1201 Patton Ave. Monessen, with Fr. Fred Pfile officiating. NOTE: Everyone is asked to go directly to the church. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Mon Valley Memorial Park, Donora. The following services will be conducted on Friday in the funeral home: Mon Valley Shipmates at 2:45 pm, Trisagion service, Fr. Fred Pfile officiating at 3:30 pm, Monessen Lions Club at 6:00 pm, V.F.W. Post 1190 and American Legion Post 28 at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to: St. Michael Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1201 Patton Ave. Monessen, PA 15062. Condolences accepted for the family at www.dalfonso-billick.com.
