Steve A. Hazy Sr., 84, of Summerville, SC, formerly of Monessen, died Tuesday in Trident Medical Center, Charleston, SC. He was born on August 23, 1933 in Monessen, the son of the late Peter and Katherine (Fogel) Hazy. Mr. Hazy was a resident of Monessen most of his life before he and his wife moved to South Carolina 13 years ago. He was a 1951 graduate of Monessen High School and received his degree in Criminal Justice from Westmoreland County Community College. He had retired from the City of Monessen Police Department, serving for 26 years, 12 as Chief of Police. He was a member of St. John the Beloved Church in Summerville, SC, having served as an usher, on the bereavement committee, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was also a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Church and its Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus Council 954, Fraternal Order of Police, and Eagles Aerie 2399. Mr. Hazy served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He is survived by is wife of 59 years, Dolores (Matinsky) Hazy, a son, Stephen A. Hazy, Jr. of Summerville, SC; a daughter, Janice Hazy of Charleston, SC; two brothers, Mike Hazy of Belle Vernon and James (Betty) Hazy of Monessen; three brothers-in-law, Bartley (Betty Ann) Meikle of Greensburg, Stanley (Eva) Matinsky of Monessen, Steve (Carol) Matinsky of Monessen; and by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Pete Hazy. Friends will be received on Saturday from 6 to 8 pm and on Sunday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm in Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Ave. Monessen. Services will be held on Monday beginning with a 9:00 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 9:30 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord Church, 44 Pennsylvania Blvd. Monessen, with Rev. Michael J. Crookston officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Mary's Cemetery, Rostraver Twp. Condolences accepted for the family at www.dalfonso-billick.com.
