Edward Vincent Monaghan, 69, of Monessen, died unexpectedly on Saturday, August 30, 2014 in the Emergency Room of Monongahela Valley Hospital Inc.
He was born in Uniontown on November 30, 1944, the son of the late Edward "Ted" and Mary Franks Monaghan. Ed was a graduate of German Township High School and received his bachelor's and master's degree from California State Teachers College. He worked as an elementary school teacher and guidance counselor in the Albert Gallatin School District for 35 years. For the past 12 years, he worked as an attendant for Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. in Monessen. He was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, Monessen Lions Club, BPOE 773, PSEA, and the New Alpine Club Golf League.
Ed was an avid sportsmen, having played baseball for California State Teachers College and softball for the Masontown Hawks. He later helped coach basketball at Albert Gallatin High School and the golf team at Monessen High School.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Virginia Sala Monaghan, a daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Jason Bradburn of Rostraver Twp., his beloved granddaughters, Quinn and Brecklynn Bradburn, a sister, Sandra (George) Rantovich of Masontown, a sister-in-law, Rosemary (Bernie) Dunyak of Monessen, two nephews, Scott (Dedra) Rantovich of Venetia, and David (Rebecca) Dunyak of Fairfax Station, VA, a niece, Debbie (Sam) Perry of Monessen, and by great nieces and great nephews.
Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Ave. Monessen. Services will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord Church. Entombment will follow in Grandview Cemetery Mausoleum, Monessen.
The Monessen Lions Club will conduct services at 6:00 pm on Tuesday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association, 7829 National Pike, Uniontown, PA 15401. Condolences accepted for the family at www.dalfonso-billick.com.
