Elizabeth "Betty" Mayernik, 82, of Monessen, died Sunday, July 27, 2008 in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Twp.She was born April 22, 1926 in Belle Vernon, the daughter of the late the late George and Anna Derzy Maksa.A registered nurse, Betty studied as a Cadet Nurse in the Brownsville Hospital then began her nursing career at the former Charleroi Monessen Hospital and continued on to spend over 40 years at the Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD. She was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church in Monessen, where she was active in the Epiphany Ladies. She was a member of the Monessen Lion's Club where she received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award and was the first woman to receive the Lion of the Year Award and also served in the Board of Directors. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Monessen Court 776 and the Mon Valley Nurses Association..She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Thomas J. Mayernik; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea J. and Brian D. Bunting of Baltimore, MD; brother, George Maksa of Chicago, IL; 2 sisters and brothers-in-law, Joan and William Picchiarini and Jean and Thomas Patterson all of Belle Vernon; as well as many nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her 2 sisters, Ethel Dunkery and Evelyn Adams.Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue, Monessen 724-684-8750 where a Blessing Service will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in the Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church with the Rev. David Nazimek as celebrant. Interment will follow in the Grandview Cemetery, Monessen.The Monessen Lion's Club will hold services on Tuesday at 7:00 PM in the funeral home and the Catholic Daughters of America, Knights of Columbus and the Epiphany Ladies will hold a combined service on Tuesday at 8:00 PM in the funeral home.
