John F. Billy

John F. Billy, 87, of Monessen, died Thursday, March 12, 2015 at his home. He was born in Monessen on September 20, 1927, the son of the late John and Mary Marcinek Billy. John was a lifelong resident of Monessen and a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church. John was an active member of his community having served as Alderman and as a member of City Council. He was one of the founders of the Monessen Cultural Heritage Festival and the Monessen Ambulance Service. While serving on City Council, he took the leading role in developing Columbus Park. He was proud of his Slovak Heritage and did a Slovak radio program on the former WESA radio. John was an active member of the former Holy Name of Jesus Roman Catholic Church where he was a member of the choir. He was a member and past Commander of American Legion Post 28, a member of VFW Post 1190, and assisted in organizing and promoting veterans parades and the building of the City Park War Memorial. He retired from the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., having worked in the Safety Department as a watchman. He then went on to serve 18 years as District Magistrate in Monessen, an office he held until his retirement. During the time he was District Magistrate, he developed a drug awareness program at the Monessen Elementary Center, and continued the program after his retirement.  He was a veteran of WWII, having served with the U.S. Army in the 8051 Air Repair Supply Detachment. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Madeline Jankura Billy, two sons, Richard A. (Lisa) Billy of Monessen, David (Julie) Billy of Lorton, VA, daughter-in-law, Rebecca Billy of Long Branch, sister-in-law, Madalyn (Beres) Billy of Monessen, four grandchildren, Brian John Billy, Marie (Edwin) Peters, Alexander and Sean Billy, and by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Jeffrey and John R. Billy, four brothers, Alex, Joseph, Andrew, and Frank Billy, and by three sisters, Elizabeth Gira, Mary Yarina, and Margaret Radacsy. Friends will be received on Saturday from 6 to 8 pm, and on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Ave. Monessen. Services will be held on Monday, March 16, 2015, beginning with 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord Church.
