Joseph D. Mondi, 91, of Monessen, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 4, 2015 in U.P.M.C. Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born in Monessen on December 16, 1923, the son of the late Antonio and Natalina Trocchio Mondi. Joe was a member of Epiphany of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, 63 year member of American Legion Post 659 Belle Vernon, Past President and a Life Member of the North Belle Vernon Fire Dept., member of Italian-American Heritage Society and Sons of Italy. He was retired from the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation and served his country during WWII with the U.S. Army 11th Airborne. He is survived by a daughter, Cathryn (Sam) Yackovich of Murrysville, a son, Joseph A. (Shirley) Mondi of N. Belle Vernon, three grandchildren, Aubrey Lynn (Russell) Buberniak, Steve (Jennifer) Yakovich, Jake (Katie) Yakovich, two sisters, Lucille Vallozzi of Monessen, Octavia "Tootsie" Palko of Greensburg, three nieces, Rosemary "Dolly" (Nick) Kampo, Elaine (Greg) Stapleton, Nina (Okey) Reese, and by a dear friend, Dorothy Vizza of Monessen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Baisl W. Mondi. Friends will be received on Sunday from 2 to 6 pm in the Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Ave. Monessen. Services will be held on Monday, June 8, 2015, beginning with a 9:30 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 10:00 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord Church.
