Dr. Joseph M. Young, 92, of Monessen, died Tuesday October 27, 2020 at his home in Monessen. Dr. Young was the treasured patriarch of his loving family. He was tireless in his devotion to his adoring wife and to his cherished children and grandchildren. He believed in hard work and commitment and upheld those standards in all he did. He loved taking time to listen to his patients, peers, neighbors and friends, and he was always ready with words of reassurance, comfort, and encouragement. He had an infectious laugh, a passion for sports, and a bright energetic attitude that endeared him to all he met. He was born in Monessen on September 7, 1928, the son of the late Joseph and Susan Caterino Iacovino. He was a 1946 graduate of Monessen High School, received his bachelors degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and graduated from the National University of Mexico Medical School. Dr. Young practiced Internal Medicine in Monessen and at Monongahela Valley Hospital for over 40 years. He was also the Industrial Physician for the local plants of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel.  Dr. Young was a man dedicated to faith, family, and community as reflected in his many roles. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army Reserves during the Korean War. Dr. Young was a member of the former St. Leonard R. C. Church and currently a member of Epiphany of Our Lord R. C. Church. He was a member of the Epiphany Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus Council #954. Dr. Young served as a Founding Board Member and as the President of the Medical Staff at Monongahela Valley Hospital, President of the American Heart Association, PA Affiliate. As President of the Monessen Redevelopment Authority he was a lion of the community and worked diligently to preserve and improve his home town. He and his late wife, Margaret "Peggy" Young, enjoyed spending time at their second home in Hilton Head, SC, which annually hosted the family for a beach retreat. He is survived by his beloved children, Joseph (Qing) Young of Toyko, Japan, Kevin (Leslie) Young of Pittsburgh, Richard (Melina) Young, DPN of Venetia, devoted care takers Kathleen (Theodore "Sonny") Lucero of Monessen, Margaret (Clyde) Horton of New Stanton; twelve cherished grandchildren, Genevieve, Arianna, and Josephina Young, Lucas, Jake, and Karina Young, Nicholas and Maria Young, Benjamin and Tatum Lucero, Camren and Caden Horton; a brother Michael J. Young and a sister Elsie Lewitsky, both of Monessen, cousin Virginia Dudas of Pleasant Unity, and by nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Margaret "Peggy" Isabell Kelly Young, son, John "Jake" Kelly Young, and by two sisters, Grace LaForte and Elizabeth "Betty" Ferencz. The team at ViaQuest Hospice, led by Joan Holets showed incredible compassion and kindness while providing exceptional care for Dr. Young and will always be remembered by his family. Friends will be received in Dalfonso-Billick Funeral Home Inc. and Cremation Services, 441 Reed Avenue Monessen, on Sunday, November 1, 2020, from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday Nov. 2nd, beginning with a 9:00 am Blessing in the funeral home, followed by a 9:30 am Funeral Mass in Epiphany of Our Lord Church 44 Pennsylvania Blvd. Monessen. Interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery, Monessen. All those attending the viewing and funeral services are required to wear a face mask and to social distance.
